Its not surprising that younger pastors are more literal. The SBC conducted a great purge in its seminaries to eliminate moderate professors and firmly institute biblical literalism. That is why many mainstream colleges and universities which were nominally associated with the SBC cut their ties, because the fundamentalists were trying to inject their orthodoxy into those institutions. Thus the deeper we get into the 21st century, the more backward American protestantism is going to become.

I disagree with the part about early America. While it is true the majority of Americans were superstitious literal Christians, America's leadership was much more skeptical.

This is an excellent anthology.

I disagree with the notion religious people want certainty- free will obviates that reality.

I do believe people who embrace religion- any religion- understand they do not need God to tell them murder is wrong. What they do believe is their faith affords them a meaning they can relate to.

I would have to agree with Space Jesus. Early American leadership was just that- real leadership. They were not blind followers but rather were skeptical enough, as he puts it, to expand the moral teachings to what went beyond the page.

Great post, FT.

My priest just sniffed the other day at news of this survey and said "They didn't ask me!" - meaning that he'd have given pro-science answers.

For that matter we recently had an adult forum lead by two UW scientists who are members of the congregation shooting all kinds of holes in that anti-science garbage from both the religious & scientific perspectives.
